Water

3 quotes from the book that describe water:

“it’s stopped raining”. “has it ?”

“If it wasn’t for the mist we could see your home across the bay,” said Gatsby. “You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock.”

After the house we were supposed to see the house, -but outside Gatsby’s window it began
to rain again.

3 moments when the symbol appears:

When Gatsby is shot by wilson at the end of the book near his pool which is full of water

When Nick ivies Gatsby and Daisy around for lunch its raining

The location of Gatsby and Daisy houses as water is the barrier and separating them

Major characters that the symbol is connected to:

The water symbol references to Gatsby + Daisy. This is because water represents time. Gatsby and daisy hadn’t seen each other for 5 years so the water represents that difference. Water also separates Gatsby and daisy houses.

What the symbol is representing:

The symbol of water is representing time and the time apart Gatsby and Daisy had apart. The water between Gatsby ad daisy houses represents these 5 years and how they have split. When they meet its raining but fades away as Gatsby and Daisy come closer and lge the dream that Gatsby has worked for and always desired. Although Daisy realises that the tie they has apart can not be forgotten so the rain comes back referencing to time.

Important things the symbol reveals about ideas and characters:
The symbol reveals that time cannot be stopped that it will keep going. This relates to Gatsby as he wants to live in the past life that he and Daisy had, but this is impossible as oy cant time travel. Water adds to the illusion of making it seem like gatsby has come back i time bt in reality he and Daisy will  never live how they use to before the 5 years apart.
Eyes
3 quotes from the book that describe eyes:

Two shining arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward.

“The eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic—their irises are one yard high”

But above the gray land and the spasms of bleak dust which drift endlessly over it, you perceive, after a moment, the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg.

3 moments when the symbol appears:

One time is the eyes of tj eckleburg are warning nik that something is wrong. At first nick thins its his car running lo on gas but it is wilson finding out that myrtle is having n affair. Wilson shows myrtle the eyes of tj eckleburg through the window saying you may be able to fool me, but you cant fool god.
Another tie is when nick first goes into the valley of shes and there is a reference to the eyes of TJ eckleburg.
one last moment is when nick first sees new characters like tim and daisy. Especially those two as there is references throughout the whole book references back to their eyes and how tom has arrogant eyes and daisy and pure and innocent.
Major characters that the symbol is connected to:
Wilson and Tom. Wilson as he lives in the valley of ashes where TJ eckleburg eyes watch over and Tom as there is a lot of references to his arrogant eyes.
What the symbol is representing:
The eyes represent god. This is because it is referenced to that the eyes of tj eckleburg dee everything like god supposedly does. The eyes foreshadow certain scenes. The eyes give a different story about everyone for example george wilson as he sees the eyes as god. It is said that he doesn’t go to any church so the eyes of TJ eckleburg that watch over the valley of ashes is his god and what he believed in as god.
Important things that the symbol reveals about ideas and characters:
The symbol reveals the true emotions and personality of a person. Tom eyes as described as “two shinning arrogant eyes”. This quote illustrates to us that eyes does reveals their true emotions as we soon find out that tom is not a gentlemen, but a arrogant and rude person.
The colour white
3 quotes from the book that describe the symbol:
“Taking a White card from his wallet he waved it before the man’s eyes.”
“high in a white place the Kings Daughter, the golden girl”
“The idea is if we don’t look out the white race will
bewill be utterly submerged.”
3 moments when the symbol appears:
And so it happened that on a warm windy evening I drove over to East Egg to see two old friends whom I
scarcely knew at all. Their house was even more elaborate than I expected, a cheerful red−and−white
Georgian Colonial mansion, overlooking the bay.
The only completely stationary object in the room was an enormous couch on which two young women were
buoyed up as though upon an anchored balloon. They were both in white, and their dresses were rippling and
fluttering as if they had just been blown back in after a short flight around the house.
The Airedaleundoubtedly there was an Airedale concerned in it
somewhere, though its feet were startlingly whitechanged hands and settled down into Mrs. Wilson’s lap,
where she fondled the weather−proof coat with rapture.
Major characters that the symbol is connected to:
Daisy, Tom, Gatsby
What the symbol is representing:
The colour white in the book represents superiority and power. This is shown to us by Gatsby hwing the cop a white card to the put of trouble. The fact that the card was white backs up the idea of the colour white meaning power. This also means that he white race in america was supposedly more superior tat the african american race an that since their skin s white they have more power.
Important things that the symbol reveals about ideas and characters:
The symbol of the colour white reveals he power of people. Thi is shown by Gatsby, Tom and Daisy being referenced to white a lot throughout the book.  Tom, Daisy is first referenced to the colour white when nick is invited o their house for lunch. Th dress she is wearing is the color white and a lot of their furniture is white. This means that they obviously have a lot of power and superiority throughout the community and are the upper class people. The fact that she an tom is white ads up to the symbol representing upper class power.

  1. Sam,

I can see where your thinking is heading but I feel you are being unclear with some of your ideas.

Make a statement, back it up with a quote from the book, explain exactly how the quote supports the idea you are stating.
